CHAPTER 9

VEX

Words. Why can’t I find any words? My brain is stuck on the fact that Max is so very close. I can smell the vegetables and vinegar on his breath. Should I tell him we’re mates? I want to tell him. Up until now, I’ve been content with watching, waiting. But now that I’ve touched him, conversed with him, now that I know for sure that he’s mine ... Fuck, he kissed me after I fought Jarius for him, and it was fucking sexy.

Max backs away, taking his delicious heat with him, but when I look at his face, it’s pulled in a grimace of discomfort. He clutches his chest. “Why did it just get colder?”

I tilt my head, looking to see if the door was left open. It’s shut tight. Snapping my head back towards Max, I ask, “Cold on the outside or inside?”

He takes a stuttering breath. “Inside.”

I send tendrils of my magic outwards, testing, feeling. Sure enough, The Divide is weakening. It’s about to fall. With a blur of motion, I move to Max, gripping his shoulder. “Try not to resist it. You must have bled enough. The Divide is pulling you back to the human realm. The magic puts everything back in its place. Monsters who try to linger in the human realm are forcefully returned to the monster realm. And it looks like the magic knows you don’t belong here.” My heart squeezes as I say those words. Max does belong. He belongs with me.

I focus back on him. “Try to breathe. It’s worse if you fight it.”

He groans. “How do I not fight it? It hurts.” His bright, pain-filled eyes find mine. “Does it hurt this much every time you cross between our worlds?”

“I’ve learned not to resist. Or better yet, I cross back over before the magic of The Divide starts to go back up.” I move closer to Max, my blood racing when he doesn’t object to my nearness. “But I’ve found myself lingering in the human realm much longer than I should, because …”

Max is trembling under my touch. I wrap my free hand around the one that’s gripping his shirt over his chest and blurt out, “The reason I’ve come to your house every night is because you are mine, Max. My mate. You and I are fated.”

He tenses slightly, but at least he doesn’t pull away as he says, “Mates. Like soulmates? Like in stories?” I nod, and he frowns. “That’s nonsense. Why would a human and monster be fated? What if The Divide had never fallen? What if we’d never met? Were we supposed to go through life without the other half of our soul?” I’m shocked he understands soul bonds so well, but he’s getting angrier with each word. “We don’t even live in the same realms. Six hours, Vex. Six hours each day, or turn, or whatever you call it. That … we can’t be …”

I look into his eyes. “But, Max, The Divide did fall.
